Google veut révolutionner la visioconférence avec le projet Starline

Google travaille sur un projet inédit appelé Starline. Ce dispositif de visioconférence permettrait à deux personnes distantes de discuter sous forme d’hologramme 3D très réaliste. Ce projet audacieux pourrait bien révolutionner le futur de la communication, mais aussi du télétravail.

Au cours des derniers mois, les plates-formes de visioconférence comme Zoom, Google Meet et Microsoft Teams, ont intégré le quotidien d’une bonne partie de la population. S’il n’a pas été évident pour tout le monde de se familiariser avec ce genre d’outil, le projet Starline de Google pourrait bien changer les choses.

Fruit de cinq ans de travaux, Starline est une cabine un peu particulière dotée d’un écran de 65 pouces. Elle est équipée de capteurs et de caméras, qui notent les différents angles de l’utilisateur pour recréer sa forme exacte, et ainsi son modèle 3D. Ces images sont alors compressées, puis transmises aux écrans des deux interlocuteurs avec une latence réduite au minimum. L’éclairage et les ombres sont ensuite ajustés par le logiciel de Google.

« Pour rendre cette expérience possible, nous appliquons des recherches en vision par ordinateur, en apprentissage automatique, en audio spatial et en compression en temps réel. Nous avons également développé un système d'affichage de champs lumineux révolutionnaire qui crée une impression de volume et de profondeur qui peut être ressentie sans avoir besoin de lunettes ou de casques supplémentaires » a détaillé Clay Bavor, vice-président de Google.

Le résultat du dispositif, qui est plutôt bluffant, donne à l’utilisateur l’impression que son interlocuteur se trouve en face de lui. « Imaginez que vous regardez par une sorte de fenêtre magique, et qu'à travers cette fenêtre, vous voyez une autre personne, grandeur nature et en trois dimensions. Vous pouvez lui parler naturellement, faire des gestes et établir un contact visuel », a indiqué Clay Bavor.

Pour le moment, le projet Starline est toujours au stade de prototype et ne peut être testé que dans certains bureaux de Google. La firme a indiqué avoir passé “des milliers d’heures” à tester cette technologie auprès de ses employés de Seattle et de New York.

Si Google n’a pas communiqué le coût de ce dispositif, il y a fort à parier qu’il soit assez onéreux. L’objectif de la firme de Mountain View est de le rendre plus abordable, mais aussi plus accessible. Pour cela, elle a prévu de poursuivre les tests au sein de ses bureaux cette année. Si le grand public devra attendre encore plusieurs années avant d’accéder à ce système 3D de visioconférence Starline, ce dernier pourrait être proposé plus rapidement aux professionnels, notamment dans le secteur médical.
