Une étude canadienne de psychologie, publiée par l'American Psychological Association, montre qu'il existerait une tendance universelle à la générosité, indépendamment des contextes culturels et économiques.

Réalisés sur une population de 235 000 personnes vivant dans 136 pays, ces travaux montrent qu'il existe une relation profonde et sans doute très ancienne entre le don désintéressé et la sensation de bien-être et d'épanouissement personnel. Chose étonnante, la capacité à donner à l'autre semble peu affectée par des facteurs comme le revenu ou la position sociale des personnes.

Selon cette étude, la plupart des participants éprouvaient un plus grand sentiment de bonheur quand ils donnaient quelque chose à quelqu'un dans le besoin que lorsqu'ils dépensaient la somme équivalente pour satisfaire un besoin personnel.

L'étude montre que, même en Inde, les participants éprouvent un plus grand sentiment de bien-être quand ils aident quelqu'un d'autre que lorsqu'ils achètent un produit pour eux mêmes. Une telle tendance naturelle à aider son prochain et le fait que ce comportement procure du plaisir pourraient s'expliquer, sur le plan de l'évolution, par l'avantage à terme pour la survie de notre espèce, que produit ce choix altruiste.
